Interview with a Fire Witch – Hunter Winters of the Winters Saga

Posted: 28 Nov 2014 10:58 PM PST

Ever wonder what it would be like to sit down with your favorite characters outside of the pages of the book? So do I. I love interviewing my characters outside of the books. Check out this interview I did with Hunter Winters from my Winters Saga Series.
Hunter Winters entered my office with an easy, likable grin. He shook his blond head and shrugged his broad shoulders to shake off excess dampness. “Miss. Brumfield?”
“Yes, hi Hunter. Please call me Jami.” I told him as I indicated the chair situated across from my desk.
He sat down and gave me his full attention.
I pursed my lips with a concerned frown. “Is it raining outside?” It was not common for rainfall in Phoenix, Arizona this time of the year.
A red blush crept across his cheeks as he lowered his eyes and leaned forward in a secretive manner. “My sister, Savannah, called up a little rainstorm to put out a fire my dragon friend and I created.” He whispered. “I was one of the casualties.”
I couldn’t help but smile. It had to be pretty fun being part of the Winters family. Witches, werewolves, vampires, dragons, psychics, angels, and all sorts of magical creatures were part of the tightly woven group of family and friends. “Your dragon friend, Freya? I was hoping you’d bring her along to this interview.”
“My sisters Miracle and Mystery are watching her. She’s still getting acclimated to this world and has to learn that magic is not something used here in public as it was on the earth she came from.”
I nod, “makes total sense.” I moved my eyes to his face. “How does it feel to know you have two more sisters raised by your recently returned from the grave father?”
“Wow, you ask some tough questions. I guess it’s good to get down to business right away. I’m happy but also uncertain. They don’t seem as involved as we are in the supernatural war brewing on the streets of Phoenix.” He examined his heavily chewed fingernails. “They’ve been lucky enough to get magic training since the day they were born and would really be great assets in the battles but they’re more interested in their own lives, which I can’t blame them… it just disappoints me.”
I nodded, having interviewed his sisters Savannah and Rebecca I completely understood. “Because for so long you and your sisters have always taken care of each other?”
He agreed, “yes, for so long it’s only been Savvy, Becca and me… well grandma was there but she always seemed distant from us. Now that I know her distance was because she was keeping the secret of our bloodline from us makes the whole thing sad. We missed out on so much because of the secrets.”
“Some would say it was secrets that made Savannah a vampire.”
“Possibly, but we all know there’s more to it than that. Our two family lines, the Winters and the Matthews made us targets from the moment we were born.” He looked at me. “Some would say, secrets kept made Rebecca a werewolf. Heck, I got in a sticky situation a month ago because of secrets I kept. Thankfully, our family comes together when things are important.”
                “What secret is that?”
The left side of his lips rose and a twinkle sparked in his sapphire blue eyes. “You’ll have to read Fire Master Rising to find out.” He teased.
“Fair enough, so tell me what it’s like being a fire witch?” I went back to my questions.
                “How so?”
“Well one time I hurled a fire ball at Rebecca by accident, which led to her sucking the air out of the room and making us all pass out. My girlfriend, Natalia got a head injury from that one.”
“I remember reading about that in Vampire Princess Rising.” I grinned.
“It’s funny looking back now, but scary in the moment. Then when I used blood magic to open the family grimoire I blew up Rebecca’s office. My sister just had to save Rebecca’s front yard from bursting into flames a few hours ago.” He shook his head. “I think it will be cool when I get these things under control but for now, dangerous.”
“Who’s helping you get them under control?”
“Many people; Natalia, dad, grandma, Mysti, Mira, even little Freya. It’s pretty sad when an eight year old dragon has better control over fire than a seventeen year old fire witch.” He admitted sadly. “But I’ll get there.”
“I’m sure you will.” I agreed.
“It’s the empathy that really gets the signals crossed.”
“Oh yes, emotions have power and sometimes when I’m overwhelmed with emotions from others it can backfire into my fire power.”
                “That can be dangerous.”
“Yep, especially because I can’t control other people’s emotions. I have to work hard at controlling my empathy in order to reign in the fire.”
“And how is the empathy control coming along?”
“Slowly and painfully.” He looked up at me. “Don’t get me wrong. I’m thankful for the gifts but wished I had better control. It’s hard to keep a secret like this from the rest of the world when you can’t even control when it flares up,” he chuckled, “no pun intended.”
I couldn’t help but giggle myself. He really was an amazing character. So happy about life, reflective, and compassionate. It was refreshing to meet a likable character that held your interest and Hunter definitely did. “In Vampire Princess Rising, we read that you went off to the alternate universe because Ophelia told you the witches in her world could help you cure your sisters. Can you give us an idea of what happened?”
                “Ophelia lied.”
                “Why would she do that?”
“Because she’s a bad guy.” He shrugged, “I can’t really answer to her motivations but she doesn’t like Rebecca and anyway she can hurt Becks she does. I learned a lesson in that situation.”
                “And what is that?”
“I learned that family will always be there… and that family is not just those that share your blood, it’s a deeper connection and a stronger commitment.”
                “That’s an important lesson.”
“One that I’ll never forget.” His phone buzzed. “Sorry.” He looked down at the screen. “I’m really sorry, I’d love to chat more but Freya needs me.” He stood up.
“Sure, I completely understand. Can you just tell me what fans of the Winters Saga can expect when they read your story, Fire Master Rising?”
He nodded and grinned. “I do a lot of growing in this upcoming book. You may remember the drugs I took in Rebecca’s story?” I nod and he continues. “I have some struggles with addiction as a side effect from the Black Death pills. Freya helps me work through it but it’s a difficult battle. I also need to learn to let my sister’s grow in their own direction. The former vampire queen, Violet goes on trial for the massacre of the wolf pack. Savannah plans her royal wedding and there is a showdown between Rebecca’s pack and Ophelia and her otherworld pack. Gosh, there are plenty more surprises. I guess you’ll just have to read it and find out.” He headed to the door as his phone went off again. “I’m sorry I really have to go.”
I nod and tell him thank you and he disappears.
He was right, there are plenty more surprises in store for the fans of the Winters Saga. Fire Master Rising is coming soon. If you haven’t read Rebecca’s story (Lone Wolf Rising) or Savannah’s story (Vampire Princess Rising) check them out on Amazon.

If you’ve enjoyed the first three Texas Nights books (Personal Assets, Running the Red Light, and Problems in Paradise), I hope you’ll finish out the series with Ashton Davenport and Mac McLaughlin. (Oh, and Napoleon!)

“Had me laughing from page one! Browning takes all those awkward little details in life that we like to hide, turns them into hilarious gems, and crafts brilliance with them. I loved the characters, the town, the dog–and the hammock! What a hoot!” ~ Sharla Lovelace, Award Winning Author of DON’T LET GO
Hilarious antics, sassy banter, and sizzling chemistry add up to one fantastic story as Mac and Ashton stumble their way toward happily ever after! ~ Tracy Brogan, International Bestselling Author
Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Carina Press / Goodreads
Book four of the Texas Nights series…
Ashton Davenport: Hot blonde. Old Money. Off-limits.

That’s how Mac McLaughlin sees her, anyway. And now that he’s enduring a temporary self-imposed exile in tiny Shelbyville, Texas, he’s seeing her way too often. Mac only wants to succeed as the contractor for the Lily Lake development in order to rebuild his reputation and return to Dallas, pronto. A sexy distraction like Ashton was not in the plans.

Mac McLaughlin: Hot builder. Cash poor. Hands-on.

Ashton kissed her trust fund goodbye and left her life as a society princess to prove she could make it on her own. Developing Lily Lake is her big chance, but it’s hard to stay focused working side-by-side with bossy, rough-around-the-edges Mac. Especially when he pulls off his shirt.

When the discovery of an endangered species derails the project, Mac can’t afford to stick around for a stalled job. His and Ashton’s explosive chemistry aside, he’s outta there…unless she can convince him that they just might be able to build something together.
Happy reading, y’all!

Title: Unexpecting

Author: Cynthia St. Aubin

Series:  Book 7 – The Case Files of Dr. Matilda Schmidt Paranormal Psychologist

Genre: Paranormal Romantic Comedy

Release Date: December 19th, 2014

When who’s your daddy is a multiple choice question…

Paranormal Psychologist Matilda Schmidt is one client away from fa-la-la-la-losing it. Holiday cheer is in the air, gun-toting fruitcakes are in her office, and she’s spinning through mood swings fast enough to make her toss her cookies–even without the morning sickness.

When Ol’ Kris Kringle goes AWOL after a nervous breakdown, his disgruntled elf is convinced that only Matilda can get him back on his sleigh in time to keep humans from tearing each other apart quicker than couponeers at a Black Friday sale.

But their efforts hit the skids when the men in Matilda’s life show up and demand to know which of them is responsible for the bun in her oven: the hot hit man who’s likely to stuff her stocking with ammunition, or the delicious demigod who’s made Santa’s naughty list a couple centuries running.

I like gravy.

This has nothing to do with the rest of my bio, but I thought you ought to know.

About the writing thing…

I wrote my first play when I was six and made my brothers perform it for my parents. I charged gum wrappers for admission (a steal, in my opinion, considering I had handed out the gum wrappers ahead of time). While I seriously doubt you’ll be seeing any of my formative work on Broadway anytime soon, I can credit these early experiments with the first of many important lessons I learned about writing: no matter how brilliant your manuscript is, some kid can go streaking butt-ass nekkid across the living room, and totally undermine your vision.

Everyone watches the naked kid because running across the living room with your cheeks flapping in the breeze is friggin’ hilarious.

Cue the lightbulb moment. People like funny stuff!

I never quite gave up on the writing thing, even as I tried my hand at being a dusty academic turned Executive Assistant (they paid me to nag! How cool is that?), but in those quiet moments when expense reports had been filed and to-do items checked off, the funny people in my head kept talking to me.

Yes, I know they have medication for that. It’s called vodka.

Since they discourage drinking at work, I started writing instead. What came out was an amalgamation (vocabulary!) of all the things I love: funny stuff, art, psychology, food, people, and paranormal critters!

Et voila! The Case Files of Dr. Matilda Schmidt, Paranormal Psychologist were born.

When I’m not sitting in my office watching cat videos and pretending to write, I like cooking, knitting (badly), and reading anything that makes me laugh (like my bank statements).

I live in Colorado with my brilliant husband and three surly cats.

Catch up on the rest of the series!

Another Great Adventure, Part 2014

Sundays With Sharon

IMG_5362Many of you remember the cruise we took last year from Italy to Brazil, and all the amazing places we visited. I took over 300 pictures and posted many of them. I plan on doing the same this year. Once again, we are cruising from Savonna, Italy to a mysterious and exotic destination: Miami. By the time you wake up and read this, we will be leaving port.

Today we wandered around Savonna, after catching a train from Genoa. Our hotel is right at the port of Savonna, and we had a day there twice before when we boarded the ship from this location. It was here during breakfast I met the Brazilian dance instructor, Roberto, from Cruisin For A SEAL. I also had the chance meeting between Mark and Sophia in the little piazza where this picture was taken. Sophia was speaking with her mother, and Mark couldn’t help but watch her out of the side of his eyes as he sipped his IMG_5355cappuccino. Remember the description? There was a statue of the Virgin Mary embedded in the building? She’s there in the picture.

The other SEALs hung out at the Ferrari store, sat and drank espresso and beer by the boats in the harbor. Remember Jones was hoping to get lucky and wanted Mark to go with him? But Mark had a date withIMG_5360Sophia, who lived in an appartment in one of these little winding streets off the Piazza?

In earlier books, Anne goes to the chapel here (although I do not call it Savonna, taking literary license) and prays for true love. Little does she know that Marcus Monteleone is in the chapel at that very moment, can hear her prayer and feel that she is the woman he’s waited for for 300 years.IMG_5352

Just about everything I do I can make into a story. Today I watched another young couple kiss goodbye and I found myself staring. I love watching people in love, kissing in public. It makes my heart sing. In Italy, they do it a lot.

I wrote nearly 60% of Cruisin For A SEAL on the cruise we took last year, finding the lifeboat Mark and Sophia would have their rendezvous, and later where the Team would pull off a daring rescue. I climbed aboard this lifeboat and sat on the seat where they made love by candlelight. I found a secret way to enter the deck through a door covered by a curtain by accident. It was the perfect plan!

So, coming to Italy and going on another cruise has lots of meaning for me. I hope my readers will enjoy some of my next adventure. I’ve also got a setting in the Caribbean I’m wanting to research, and looking for a house to rent so I can explore next year further, perhaps stay a month or two and write. Another thing to add to my bucket list.

How about you? Do locations create stories in your head. Even if you’re not a writer, do you make up stories about people just by watching them like I did with the young couple today? Are there places that get your creative juices flowing? Or make you so romantic you practically can’t stand it? I want to hear it!!

Enjoy your Sunday.

How did I miss Sharon’s Sunday Update???

Yesterday, my brother and I went to visit our step-mom, who is downsizing. She wanted to return items we had grown up with, now that our father had passed. These were things coming back to our family that were owned and enjoyed by our mother and dad during their nearly 60 years of marriage. You haven’t lived until your father starts courting at 80, and then remarries. Being an engineer with good humor, although dry, and not known for being a “player” he still managed for part of his last years to have a wife in both worlds, here and in Heaven.

IMG_5250Some of these things had been in drawers, unseen, because there were so many of them.  My brother and I appreciated that great care was taken not to dispose of anything the family would want to be passed down later on. A a suggestion my father should mark and label everything, he scoffed, “I don’t want to be living in a museum of my own things.” Point taken. And so, we know Dad loved them, tucked them away in a special place, but left no notation about it or its significance. We had to guess.

I think everyone wants to be like the kids in Madison County, finding an old love letter from someone not of their father’s lineage, a great love secretly tucked away and hidden from family. In reality, I’m not sure that happens very often. We didn’t expect this, nor did we get it. But it’s always fun to revisit the things our father held, loved and decided to save in a special place.

We found these glasses. My brother and I had never seen them before and there wasn’t anything indicating what they were. We guessed they belonged to a bachelor “uncle” of my mother’s who lived in San Francisco and was a dental salesman for a time. He’s buried along with his two spinster sisters, Aunt Mary and Aunt Elizabeth, in a cemetary in Galt, California. We knew Uncle John wore glasses, but not a double-lensed monocle.IMG_5251

Until we stumbled upon this picture. This is my great grandfather Fridell, on occasion of his 25th wedding anniversary 99 years ago. I remember this man, and so, I think I did see these glasses worn by him. Although his beard is short in this picture, he grew it long after my great grandmother passed, and used to separate it and tuck each half into his vest pocket. I remember playing with his beard while I sat on his lap as a toddler. He used to chase me around the house, saying “bitte, bitte Sharon” and I can remember screaming and nearly running into things as we played this little game of chase.

IMG_5243Grandpa Fridell came over from Norway as a young Baptist minister, seeking religious freedom in an environment where it was said the children could not go to school unless they were Lutheran. For a time, he traveled the midwest in a buckboard, with eventually 9 children, living from house to house as he cared for three churches in Nebraska, where there was a large Scandanavian population. My grandmother was the oldest, and had been born in Norway.

I can remember him talking about my great grandma, not by name, but always by his name for her, which was “My Beloved.” IMG_5248

He became the pastor at the church California my mother’s father would one day lead, which is where my parents met. It was the church where my grandmother and two of her sisters met and married my grandfather and two of his brothers.

And so the lost is found. The mystery solved. No steamy love letters amongst my father’s things, but a story of dedication, and sacrifice, of new beginnings in a new country and a dynasty to follow. And yes, like everything in my life, a love story.
